As we enter the summer months on the northern hemisphere and winter on the southern one, the global political landscape is witnessing significant events that will undoubtedly influence our collective efforts in improving global health. Recent elections in, among others, the European Union, India, and Mexico have revealed a complex tapestry of political dynamics which will be the environment for our strategies and activities.

Against this backdrop, I am thrilled to announce that in addition to an event on the WHO investment round, the central topics and many key speakers for the upcoming World Health Summit have been confirmed. Under the leitmotiv 'Building Trust for a Healthier World' the chosen themes are more relevant than ever.

World Health Assembly: A new agenda for global health emerges

The discussions on the Pandemic Accord and the International Health Regulations overshadowed many of the other important agreements and decisions that were reached at this year’s Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly. WHO Member States reinforced their commitment to wellbeing as adopted in last years resolution on Achieving well-being: a global framework for integrating well-being into public health utilizing a health promotion approach.

This provides six strategic directions based on a ‘whole-of-government’ and ‘whole-of-society’ approach. They interrelate with other key decisions taken by the WHA: WHO member states approved the first resolution on climate and health to come before the World Health Assembly in 16 years – drawing attention to how climate change is leading to more deaths and disability from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), health emergencies, vector-borne diseases as well as mental health impacts. Member States also adopted the resolution on the Economics of Health for All,  informed by the final report of the WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All. It underlines the need to shape economic policy to align with health goals.

Finally, the adoption of WHO’s 14th General Programme of Work provides the overarching vision for how WHO proposes to promote, provide and protect the health and well-being of all people, everywhere. It sets an ambitious agenda for global health in the face of challenges and key mega trends including climate change, aging, migration, evolving geopolitics, and advancing science and technology. The global health community is challenged as never before.

Globally, HIV/AIDS is responsible for 1.5% of all deaths, underscoring its significant impact as a major cause of mortality. This is especially pronounced in Sub-Saharan Africa, where in some countries, HIV/AIDS accounts for up to a quarter of all deaths. Despite progress in reducing new infections and deaths since the peak in the 1990s and mid-2000s, HIV/AIDS remains a major health burden worldwide. Antiretroviral therapy has been crucial in saving lives, but the disease continues to be one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally.

Charité announces new PhD Program in Global Health

A new interdisciplinary PhD program is now accepting applications for its October start. The program offers a structured, English-language curriculum aimed at fostering scientific excellence and cross-border perspectives on global health. Apply by August 20, 2024.
