WHS Regional Meeting - Latin America, São Paulo


For the first time, the WHS Regional Meeting was held in Latin America. From April 6-8, about 1,000 participants and 150 speakers from 30 countries gathered in São Paulo to focus on the most urgent challenges for health in the region.

World Health Summit 2014

The next World Health Summit will be held from October 19–22 in the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, Germany, addressing the most urgent challenges for health worldwide, as well as continuing to analyze results and insights from the Regional Meeting in São Paulo.

The program will consist of keynote lectures, symposia and workshops and be structured by four main tracks:

- Education and Leadership
- Research and Innovation
- Evidence to Policy
- Global Health for Development

Speaker Update

Several speakers already confirmed their participation in the World Health Summit 2014. Among them are:

Barry J. Marshall
Nobel Prize Laureate

Prof Barry J. Marshall received a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Western Australia in 1974. In 1981, Marshall met Robin Warren, a pathologist interested in gastritis. Together, they studied the presence of spiral bacteria in association with gastritis. In 1982, they performed the initial culture of H. pylori and developed their hypothesis related to the bacterial cause of peptic ulcer and gastric cancer.

In 2005, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Barry J. Marshall and Robin Warren, his long-time collaborator, "for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease".

Bettina Menne
Program Manager

Dr Bettina Menne is program manager of climate change, green health services and sustainable development at the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health. She works in the WHO since 1997. Dr Menne is a medical doctor and specialist in hygiene and public health.

She coordinated the WHO European program on health and global changes, as well as several in- and outhouse research and policy teams. Dr Menne was part of the IPCC Nobel piece price winning team, leading the health chapter and the synthesis report. Dr Menne got a BMA award for public health in 2009and was part of several winning epidemiological studiess.

Leroy Hood

Dr Leroy Hood Hood was involved in the development of five instruments critical for contemporary biology: automated DNA sequencers, DNA synthesizers, protein sequencers, peptide synthesizers, and an ink jet printer for constructing DNA arrays. These instruments opened the door to the era of big data in biology and medicine. In 2000, he co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology, the first of its kind.

Dr Hood is now pioneering new approaches to P4 medicine: predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory. Most recently, he has embarked on creating a P4 pilot project on 100,000 well individuals, that is transforming healthcare.

New Voices in Global Health: Call for Abstracts

The New Voices in Global Health (NVGH) is a competitive abstract submission and selection program designed to highlight important research, policy and advocacy initiatives of new and future leaders in global health, and empower participants with global health advocacy skills.

Selected participants will have the opportunity to make a presentation at the World Health Summit 2014. Selected abstracts will be published in a special booklet available at the World Health Summit and on The Lancet´s website.
